EL TIPO

Todo el mundo necesita un lugar; no debería ser invadiendo a alguien más

Si creciste siendo el tipo de mujer que los hombres quieren mirar,
puedes permitirles que te miren
pero no confundas ojos con manos,
o ventanas, o espejos.
Déjales ver como se ve una mujer;
quizás nunca han visto una antes.

Si creciste siendo el tipo de mujer que los hombres quieren tocar
puedes permitirles tocarte.
A veces no es a ti a quien buscan,
a veces, es una botella, una puerta, un sándwich, un Pulitzer, otra mujer...
Pero sus manos te encontraron a ti primero.
No te confundas con ser una cuidadora, una musa, o una promesa, o una víctima, o un snack.
Eres una mujer,
piel y huesos, venas y nervios, corazón y sudor.
No estás hecha de metáforas,
ni de disculpas, ni de excusas.

Si creciste siendo el tipo de mujer los hombres quieren contener,
puedes permitirles contenerte.
Todo el día, ellos practican mantener sus cuerpos erguidos.
Aún después de la evolución, esto sigue sintiéndose poco natural.
Todavía tensa los músculos, sostiene los brazos firmes y la columna tiesa.
Sólo algunos hombres querrán aprender lo que se siente volverse un signo de interrogación a tu alrededor,
admitir que no tienen todas las respuestas que pensaron que tendrían ahora.
Algunos hombres querrán tomarte como si fueras la respuesta.
No eres LA respuesta, no eres el problema, ni el poema, o la frase de remate, o el acertijo, o el chiste.

Mujer, si creces para ser el tipo de mujer que los hombres quieren amar,
puedes dejar que te amen.
Ser amada no es lo mismo que amar.
Enamorarte es descubrir el océano, después de años de nadar en charcos.
Es reconocer que tienes manos.
Es alcanzar la cuerda cuando las multitudes se han ido a casa.

No pierdas tiempo preguntándote si eres el tipo de mujer que los hombres quieren lastimar.
Si te deja el corazón resonando como una alarma,
podrías aprender a cantar al unísono.
Es duro dejar de amar el océano.
Aún después de que te ha dejado suspirando — cubierta de sal.
Perdónate por las decisiones que has tomado,
las cuales aún llamas errores cuando las arropas por la noche.
Y comprende esto:
Conócete como el tipo de mujer que está buscando un lugar propio.
Deja que las estatuas tiemblen.
Tú siempre has sido EL lugar.

Everyone needs a place. It shouldn’t be inside of someone else.

If you grow up the type of woman men want to look at,
You can let them look at you.
But do not mistake eyes for hands or windows or mirrors.
Let them see what a woman looks like.
They may have not ever seen one before.

If you grow up the type of woman men want to touch,
You can let them touch you.
Sometimes, it is not you they are reaching for.
Sometimes it is a bottle, a door, a sandwich, a Pulitzer — another woman.
But their hands found you first.
Do not mistake yourself for a guardian or a muse or a promise or a victim or a snack.
You are a woman — skin and bones, veins and nerves, hair and sweat.
You are not made out of metaphors, not apologies, not excuses.

If you grow up the type of woman men want to hold,
You can let them hold you.
All day they practice keeping their bodies upright.
Even after all this evolving it still feels unnatural.
Still strains the muscles, hold firms the arms and spine.
Only some men will want to learn what it feels like to curl themselves into a question mark around you,
Admit they do not have the answers they thought they would by now.
Some men will want to hold you like the answer.
You are not the answer.
You are not the problem.
You are not the poem or the punch-line or the riddle or the joke.

Woman, if you grow up the type men want to love,
You can let them love you.
Being loved is not the same thing as loving.
When you fall in love, it is discovering the ocean after years of puddle jumping.
It is realizing you have hands.
It is reaching for the tightrope when the crowds have all gone home.

Do not spend time wondering if you are the type of women men will hurt.
If he leaves you with a car alarm heart, you learn to sing along.
It is hard to stop loving the ocean even after it has left you gasping — "salty."
So forgive yourself for the decisions you've made.
The ones you still call mistakes when you tuck them in at night and know this:
Know you are the type of woman who is searching for a place to call yours.
Let the statues crumble.
You have always been the place.
You are a woman who can build it yourself.
You are born to build.

Você pode deixar que eles te olhem.

Apenas alguns homens irão querer aprender qual a sensação de se enroscarem como um


um ponto de interrogação ao seu redor e admitir que eles não têm as respostas
Que pensaram que teriam até agora;

alguns homens irão querer te abraçar como se você fosse A Resposta.
Você não é a resposta.

Você não é o problema. Você não é o poema
Ou o trocadilho ou a charada ou a piada.

Mulher. Se você vier a se tornar o tipo que os homens querem amar
Você pode deixar que eles te amem.

Ser amada não é o mesmo que amar.
Quando você ama, é como descobrir o oceano

Após passar anos brincando com poças. É perceber que você tem mãos.
É atravessar uma corda bamba quando toda a multidão já foi para casa.

Não perca seu tempo se perguntando se você é o tipo de mulher
Que os homens irão ferir. Se eles a deixarem com um alarme cantando em seu coração

Aprenda a cantar junto. É difícil deixar de amar o oceano
Mesmo quando ele a deixou arfando e coberta de sal.

Perdoe a si mesma pelas decisões que você tomou.
Aquelas que você ainda chama de erros quando as esconde no meio da noite

E saiba disso:

Saiba que você é o tipo de mulher
Que está procurando um lugar para chamar de seu.

Deixe que as estátuas sucumbam.

que me alienta a seguir adelante.

(Para la promoción de maestras del INCA 1974)

Éramos, entonces, un puñado de sueños
corriendo, día a día, para acortar distancias.
A veces, fuimos viento soplando por doquier
A veces, fuimos nubes vagando sin destino.
Algunas fueron roca de acantilado y
otras fueron ríos que llegaron al mar.

Luego, fuimos dejando atrás esas distancias y
jirones de sueños olvidados;
sin embargo, al unirnos nuevamente,
nuestros recuerdos vienen con canciones
que renuevan los votos del pasado:
Servir, amar y dar a manos llenas

Lavá la ropa blanca el lunes y ponela a secar sobre las piedras; lavá la ropa de color el martes y ponela a secar en el tendedero; no camines a pleno sol con la cabeza descubierta; a los buñuelos de calabaza, freílos en aceite de oliva muy caliente; poné en remojo tus bombachas en cuanto te las saques; cuando compres algodón para hacerte una bonita blusa, asegurate de que no lleve acrílico, porque al lavarlo perdería la caída; dejá el pescado salado en remojo durante toda la noche antes de cocinarlo; ¿es verdad que cantas benna [1] en catequesis?; comé siempre de forma que a nadie se le revuelva el estómago al mirarte hacerlo; los domingos, intentá caminar como una señorita, y no como la puta en la que parecés tan dispuesta a convertirte; no cantes benna en catequesis; no hables con los mendigos, ni siquiera para darles direcciones; no comas fruta por la calle —las moscas te perseguirán; «pero si yo nunca canto benna los domingos, y mucho menos en catequesis»; así se cose un botón; así se hace un ojal para el botón que acabás de coser; así tenés que arreglar el dobladillo de un vestido cuando veas que empieza a descoserse y para evitar parecerte a la puta en la que, yo sé, estás tan dispuesta a convertirte; así debés planchar la camisa caqui de tu padre para que no queden arrugas; así debes planchar los pantalones caqui de tu padre para que no queden arrugas; así se cultiva el Quimbombó —lejos de la casa, porque el árbol del Quimbombó junta hormigas coloradas; cuando cultives Taro, asegurate de que tenga siempre agua en abundancia, de lo contrario te picará la garganta al comerlo; así se barre un rincón; así se barre toda la casa; así se barre un patio; así se le sonríe a alguien que no te gusta demasiado; así se le sonríe a alguien que no te gusta en absoluto; así se le sonríe a alguien que te gusta del todo; así se prepara la mesa para tomar el té; así se prepara la mesa para la cena; así se prepara la mesa para una cena a la que asistirá un invitado importante; así se prepara la mesa para el almuerzo; así se prepara la mesa para el desayuno; así hay que comportarse en presencia de hombres que no te conocen demasiado bien, y de esa manera no reconocerán inmediatamente a la puta en la que te advertí no debés convertirte; asegurate de lavarte todos los días, aunque sea con tu propia saliva; no te pongas en cuclillas para jugar a las bolitas —no sos un varón, ya lo sabés; no aceptes flores de la gente: podrían contagiarte algo; no les tires piedras a los mirlos, porque puede que en realidad no sean mirlos; así se hace un budín de pan; así se hace la doukona [2]; así se prepara el picante; así se prepara un remedio bueno para el resfrío; así se prepara un remedio bueno para deshacerse de un bebé incluso antes de que se haya convertido en un bebé; así se pesca un pez; así se devuelve al agua un pez que al final no querés, para evitar que te caiga una maldición; así se intimida a un hombre; así te intimidan los hombres; así se ama a un hombre, y si eso no funciona, existen otras formas, y si éstas tampoco funcionan, no te sientas demasiado mal por renunciar a él; así se escupe para arriba si te dan ganas de hacerlo, y así de rápido hay que moverse para que tu propio escupitajo no te caiga encima; así se llega a fin de mes; aplastá siempre el pan para comprobar que es fresco; «¿y qué si el panadero no me deja tocar el pan?»; ¿me estás diciendo que, después de todo, vas a convertirte realmente en el tipo de mujer a la que el panadero no deja ni siquiera acercarse al pan?
