Nora Ephron, Lo que desearía haber sabido (+3)

Obra de Hope Gangloff

LO QUE DESEARÍA HABER SABIDO

La gente sólo es de una manera.
Compra, no rentes.

WHAT I WISH I'D KNOWN

People have only one way to be.
Buy, don't rent.
Never marry a man you wouldn't want to be divorced from.
Don't cover a couch with anything that isn't more or less beige.
Don't buy anything that is 100 percent wool even if it seems to be very soft and not particularly itchy when you try it on in the store.
You can't be friends with people who call after 11 p.m.
Block everyone on your instant mail.
The world's greatest babysitter burns out after two and a half years.
You never know.
The last four years of psychoanalysis are a waste of money.
The plane is not going to crash.
Anything you think is wrong with your body at the age of thirty-five you will be nostalgic for at the age of forty-five.
At the age of fifty-five you will get a saggy roll just above your waist even if you are painfully thin.
This saggy roll just above your waist will be especially visible from the back and will force you to reevaluate half the clothes in your closet, especially the white shirts.
Write everything down.
Keep a journal.
Take more pictures.
The empty nest is underrated.
You can order more than one dessert.
You can't own too many black turtleneck sweaters.
If the shoe doesn't fit in the shoe store, it's never going to fit.
When your children are teenagers, it's important to have a dog so that someone in the house is happy to see you.
Back up your files.
Overinsure everything.
Whenever someone says the words "Our friendship is more important than this," watch out, because it almost never is.
The reason you're waking up in the middle of the night is the second glass of wine.
The minute you decide to get divorced, go see a lawyer and file the papers.
Overtip.
Never let them know.
If only one third of your clothes are mistakes, you're ahead of the game.
If friends ask you to be their child's guardian in case they die in a plane crash, you can say
no.
There are no secrets.

No quise decir,

THE MAD COW IN LOVE

I want to be an angel and really think
I’m getting there with this mind of mine,
shrinking every day toward the cleanness,
the size of a baby animal’s brain.
Trouble is, I want you to be an angel too
─ and want that more if anything. It’s one
of those demands I can’t raise just like that,
evenings, when we’re reading our different newspapers
you scanning your pages and me mine for an item
to start speech, make mouths smile, knees touch─something
in all that murder and mayhem to launch love.

You tell me you’re looking for news of the self.
Do you want to be an angel? I know
the answer already and it’s rough medicine.
But hink of all the kinds there are, as many
as the different degrees of reaching
for the good. You might get away without
searching for the soul at all those places,
today at least, you’d rather not get to know.
And angels do a variety of jobs:
the post of perpetual adoration might suit,
or divine messenger but I fancy for you
the government of the stars and all the elements.
I know you well enough to choose, after all this time
as foreign correspondent on the track of who you are,
looking for leads: your last screw, the food
you threw away, your strategic approaches
for living through the next hour. I don’t mean it,
though, any of it. I want you earthly,
including all the global terrors and harms
which might come when we fall backwards
into the world of horn and hoof.

Too bad we’ll be looking at it
Through conference windows

TODAY WE ARE SHOOTING POETS

not bad or good poets
not metrical, not free verse not concrete
or performance poets,
not poets who write about nothing but poetry and poets,

not confessional poets,
English but like pop groups singing in American,

not poets writing as if they were talking as if
anyone ever talked like that,

not poets who write about what it is
never to be able to write, or love poems
or sex poems or poems about the colour of
their oppression or about the gender
of their oppression or about its class,

not poets with words all
over the place and lowercase i’s,
not incomprehensible even to themselves poets

not poets who get famous for something
be it poetry or who they are or what they do
besides writing poems

not neglected poems
nor the experts on their own poems
who read nobody for the fear of influence,

not poets up to the ears in scholarship
and not a spark in them

no. We are shooting the others poets.
You know who they are and I do.
Let’s go buddy, let’s do it.

Llorando.

A REMEDY FOR INSOMNIA

Not sheep coming down the hills,
not cracks on the ceiling—
count the ones you loved,
the former tenants of dreams
who would keep you awake,
once meant the world to you,
rocked you in their arms,
those who loved you . . .
You will fall asleep, by dawn, in tears.

Fotografía de Anja Niemi

Si hay algo que desear,
habrá algo de que arrepentirse.
Si hay algo de que arrepentirse,
habrá algo que recordar.
Si hay algo que recordar,
no habrá nada de que arrepentirse.
Si no hubo nada de que arrepentirse,
no habrá nada que desear.

IF THERE IS SOMETHING TO DESIRE

If there is something to desire,
there will be something to regret.
If there is something to regret,
there will be something to recall.
If there is something to recall,
there was nothing to regret.
If there was nothing to regret,
there was nothing to desire.

Traducción del ruso de Steven Seymour

WHAT  WE  MISS

Who says it’s so easy to save a life? In the middle of an interview for
the job you might get you see the cat from the window of the seven-
teenth floor just as he’s crossing the street against traffic, just as
you’re answering a question about your worst character flaw and lying
that you are too careful. What if you keep seeing the cat at every
moment you are unable to save him? Failure is more like this than like
duels and marathons. Everything can be saved, and bad timing pre-
vents it. Every minute, you are answering the question and looking
out the window of the church to see your one great love blinded by
the glare, crossing the street, alone.

Selima Hill, Ella misma

Fotografía de Anka Zhuravleva

ELLA MISMA

Veo a la mosca,
atraída por mis heridas,
obstinada
rompiendo mi red;
y cuando la mosca
se marcha de puntillas
fuera de la vista
veo el perfil distante de mi madre
que siempre se protege
a sí misma en ella misma.

HERSELF

I watch the fly,
attracted by my wounds,
obstinately
quartering my net;
and when the fly
tiptoes out of sight
I watch the distant outline
of my mother
who likes to keep herself
to herself.
