16. APRENDIZAJES DE VIDA DE 16 AÑOS DE THE MARGINALIAN
REFLEXIONES SOBRE MANTENER EL ALMA INTACTA Y VIVA DIGNA DE SÍ

14. Elige la alegría.
15. Supérate a ti mismo.

16. LIFE-LEARNINGS FROM 16 YEARS OF THE MARGINALIAN
REFLECTIONS ON KEEPING THE SOUL INTACT AND ALIVE WORTHY OF ITSELF

1. Allow yourself the uncomfortable luxury of changing your mind.
2. Do nothing for prestige or status or money or approval alone.
3. Be generous.
4. Build pockets of stillness into your life.
5. As Maya Angelou famously advised, when people tell you who they are, believe them. Just as important, however, when people try to tell you who you are, don’t believe them.
6. Presence is far more intricate and rewarding an art than productivity.
7. “Expect anything worthwhile to take a long time.”
8. Seek out what magnifies your spirit.
9. Don’t be afraid to be an idealist.
10. Don’t just resist cynicism — fight it actively.
11. Question your maps and models of the universe, both inner and outer, and continually test them against the raw input of reality.
12. There are infinitely many kinds of beautiful lives.
13. In any bond of depth and significance, forgive, forgive, forgive. And then forgive again.
14. Choose joy.
15. Outgrow yourself.
16. Unself. Nothing is more tedious than self-concern — the antipode of wonder.

EL PODER DEL TACTO: COORDENADAS

Todavía me pregunto
no sentí dolor alguno

placer animal.

Es inútil preguntar
por qué el cuchillo estaba
en mi mano izquierda entonces,
o este pie en particular está aquí
ahora.
Algunas cosas simplemente salen mal,
y luego hacemos uso de las cicatrices.
Algunas cosas salen bien
sólo cuando dejamos de presionar
sobre la hoja del por qué.

THE POWER OF TOUCH: COORDINATES

I still wonder
why the knife was
in my left hand
when I pressed it into
the watermelon bark
blade-side up,
pressed it hard and slow
and felt it stop at my bone,
felt no pain at all
as it split my thumb
along a perfect meridian.
I watched the blood spill
its perfect pomegranate seeds
into the aluminium spaceship
of the kitchen sink.

I was six.
I was learning directions.
Left became encoded
in the scar.
Across this slice of spacetime,
this half a lifetime,
I still glide my index finger over it
in animal instinct
when asked to orient.

Tonight I pressed my thumb meridian
into the equator of her bare sole,
she whose footfall I recognise
across the room,
across the gallery,
across the galaxy,
pressed it hard and slow
into the moan of her
animal pleasure.

No use asking
why the knife was
in my left hand then,
or this particular foot
now.
Some things we just get wrong,
then make use of the scars.
Some things we get right
only when we cease pressing
against the blade of why.

Y me he vuelto tan fuerte
algo raro –casi imposible.
Arrodillada he ofrecido novenas,

FOR WOMEN LIKE US

There must be a saint for women like us—
those who were never virgins,
never knew what grace is innocence.
I searched everywhere to find her,
rolled decades of beads to be near
the woman who could hold
all my sorrows in her lap,
halt this breakneck flight from myself.
And I have grown so strong
with flying people are amazed,
think me a wonder that speeds the skies,
not knowing how I hunger for rest
from the night that gave me wings,
made my tenderness an invincible core,
a strange thing—almost possible.
I have offered novenas on my knees,
bargained with heaven to be once
the woman denied me, the womb
where that power comes to ground.

There must be a saint for women like us—
those who will never woo a unicorn.
