Dorothea Tanning, Mujer saludando a los árboles

Fotografía de Mich Montalvo en la Reserva de la Biosfera Tehuacán-Cuicatlán

MUJER SALUDANDO A LOS ÁRBOLES

Lo normal es que nadie
se dé cuenta al principio.
Me ha dado por maravillarme
de los árboles del parque.
Algo puedo deciros:
son hermosos
y lo saben.
También están exhaustos,
cientos de años
atascados en el mismo lugar:
hermosos paralíticos.
Cuando estoy a sus pies
sienten que los observo,
miran cómo agito mi necia
mano, y envidian la alegría
de ser un blanco móvil.

Los ociosos que pueblan los bancos
empiezan a fijarse.
"Hay gente para todo...",
se oye decir.
Muchos tienen los ojos
perdidos en el suelo,
como si de verdad no hubiera nada
que mirar, hasta que
ahí va esa mujer
saludando a las ramas
de estos viejos árboles. Alzad
la frente, amigos, mirad arriba,
puede que veáis más
de lo que nunca os pareció posible,
justo ahí donde algo
la saluda tal vez para decirle
que ha visto lo maravilloso.

WOMAN WAVING TO TREES

Not that anyone would
notice it at first.
I have taken to marveling
at the trees in our park.
One thing I can tell you:
they are beautiful
and they know it.
They are also tired,
hundreds of years
stuck in one spot—
beautiful paralytics.
When I am under them,
they feel my gaze,
watch me wave my foolish
hand, and envy the joy
of being a moving target.

Loungers on the benches
begin to notice.
One to another,
"Well, you see all kinds..."
Most of them sit looking
down at nothing as if there
was truly nothing else to
look at until there is
that woman waving up
to the branching boughs
of these old trees. Raise your
heads, pals, look high,
you may see more than
you ever thought possible,
up where something might
be waving back, to tell her
she has seen the marvelous.

Dorothea Tanning, Artista, una vez

Fotografía de Vikram Kushwah

ARTISTA, UNA VEZ

Érase un cuarto de alquiler.
Con un catre y una ventana,

alcanzaba para soñar,
para un hecho asombroso como

estar al fin, y sin lugar a dudas,
en Nueva York, alcanzaba

para guardar, como en un embarazo,
esas telas aún no pintadas

del porvenir. Incandescentes,
tomándose su tiempo para

llegar, para salir de su interior,
rezumando metamorfosis

en la cálida oscuridad,
esperaban y prometían.

Pasó el tiempo. Hundida en el ahora,
ya no está tan segura.

Comparado a lo que anillaba
su intelecto antes de la prueba,

antes del simple logro
fácil, seguro –ah, qué botín

de vida aún por saborear,
por definir–, el resto...

ARTIST, ONCE

That was in a room for rent.
It had a window and a bed,

it was enough for dreaming,
for stunning facts like being

at last, and undeniably
in NYC, enough to hold

enfolded as in a pregnancy,
those not-yet-painted works

to be. They, hanging fire,
slow to come—to come

out—being deep inside her,
oozing metamorphosis

in her warm dark, took
their time and promised.

Fast forward. Trapped in now,
she's not all that sure.

Compared to what entwined
her mind before the test,

before the raw achievement
pat, secure—oh, such bounty

to be lived, yet untasted,
undefined—all the rest...
