He ido aquí y allá
enarbola tu Edward Thomas, Yeats o Pound.

'At the moment, if you’re seen reading poetry in a train, the carriage empties instantly'.
-Andrew Motion in a Guardian interview

Indeed ’tis true, I travel here and there
On British rail a lot. I’ve often said
That if you haven’t got the first-class fare
You really need a book of verse instead.
Then, should you find that all the seats are taken
Brandish your Edward Thomas, Yeats or Pound
Your fellow-passengers, severely shaken.
Will almost all be loath to stick around.
Recent research in railway sociology
Shows it’s best to read the stuff aloud:
A few choice bits from Motion’s new anthology
And you’ll be lonelier than any cloud.
This stratagem’s godsend to recluses
And demonstrates that poetry has its uses.

HAIKU: MIRANDO POR LA VENTANA DEL CUARTO DE ATRÁS
SIN LAS GAFAS PUESTAS

¿Cuál será esa maravillosa
nueva flor color amarillo limón?
Ah, vale, una pelota.

WITHOUT MY GLASSES

What’s that amazing
new lemon-yellow flower?
Oh yes, a football.

Wendy Cope, A salvo

Fotografía de Elinor Carucci
A SALVO

'Ese amor es todo lo que hay,
es todo lo que sabemos del amor ... '

- Emily Dickinson

Nosotros permanecemos a salvo y libres,

SPARED

‘That Love is all there is,
Is all we know of Love…’

— Emily Dickinson

It wasn’t you, it wasn’t me,
Up there, two thousand feet above
A New York street. We’re safe and free,
A little while, to live and love,

Imagining what might have been –
The phone call from the blazing tower,
A last farewell on the machine,
While someone sleeps another hour,

Or worse, perhaps, to say goodbye
And listen to each other’s pain,
Send helpless love across the sky,
Knowing we’ll never meet again,

Or jump together, hand in hand,
To certain death. Spared all of this
For now, how well I understand
That love is all, is all there is.

Wendy Cope, 3 poemas 3 (II)

Obra de Cristóbal Toral

A LAS 3 DE LA MADRUGADA

No hay sonido alguno en el cuarto
salvo el tictac del reloj
que ha comenzado a asustarse
como un bichito atrapado
en una enorme caja.

Libros yacen abiertos sobre la alfombra.

En otro lugar
estás tú dormido
y junto a ti una mujer
que llora suavemente
para que no te despiertes.

AT 3 A. M.

the room contains no sound
except the ticking of the clock
which has begun to panic
like an insect, trapped
in an enormous box.

Books lie open on the carpet.

Somewhere else
you're sleeping
and beside you there's a woman
who is crying quietly
so you won't wake.

PASTORAL

Ovejas muertas y conejos aplastados. Oh, me encantará.

PASTORAL

I wish I was a provinicial poet,
Writing a lot about nature,
Whenever I thought about London poets,
I'd mutter darkly, 'I hate yer.'

And off I'd stomp down the wild, wild lanes
In my jeans and my wellington boots.
A provinicial poet doesn't need lipstick
Or tights or respectable suits -

The clutter of urban life. How wonderful
Just to discard it all
And spend one's time communing with everything,
Perched on a dry-stone wall.

And after a busy day communing
To amble back home for a bite,
Then go to the pub with some real people,
Who manage twelve pints in a night,

Which helps them get through the provincial evenings
Without too much boredom or pain.
Real people, as solid and ruddy and calm
As a London bus in the rain!

Some day I'll go and live in the country
And many a notebook I'll fill
With keen observations of animals (mostly
The dead ones because they keep still).

Dead sheep and squashed rabbits. Oh, how I shall love it.
My face will be peaceful and brown
And shining with love for all of creation,
Excepting those poets in town.

Wendy Cope, La naranja (+1)

Y esa naranja me hizo tan feliz

THE ORANGE

At lunchtime I bought a huge orange—
The size of it made us all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave—
They got quarters and I got a half.

And that orange, it made me so happy,
As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park.
This is peace and contentment. It's new.

The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all the jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
I love you. I'm glad I exist.

A LARANJA

Fez-me tão feliz essa laranja -
Como me tem acontecido ultimamente
Com as coisas vulgares. As compras.

E ainda me sobrou tempo.
Amo-te. É maravilhoso viver.

POEM COMPOSED IN SANTA BARBARA

The poets talk. They talk a lot.
They talk of T. S. Eliot.
One is anti. One is pro.
How hard they think! How much they know!
They're happy. A cicada sings.
We women talk of other things.

(de Serious Concerns, faber&faber, 2002,  -1.ª edición, 1992-)

POEMA COMPOSTO EM SANTA BÁRBARA

Os poetas falam. Falam muito.
Falam de T.S. Eliot.
Um é contra. Outro a favor.
Que pensamentos profundos, os seus! Quanta sabedoria!
São felizes. Uma cigarra canta.
Nós, mulheres, falamos de outras coisas.

DOS REMEDIOS PARA EL AMOR

1. No verle. No llamarle ni escribirle.
2. La vía fácil: llegar a conocerle.

TWO CURES FOR LOVE

1. Don't see him. Don't phone or write a letter.
2. The easy way: get to know him better.

FLORES

Algunos hombres nunca lo piensan.
Tú sí, tú te presentabas
Y decías que casi me habías traído flores
Pero algo había ido mal.

La tienda había cerrado. O tuviste dudas -
Yo podría no querer tus flores

Aquello me hacía sonreír y abrazarte.
Ahora sólo puedo sonreír.
Pero, mira, las flores que casi trajiste
Han durado todo este tiempo.

FLOWERS

Some men never think of it.
You did. You'd come along
And say you'd nearly brought me flowers
But something had gone wrong.

The shop was closed. Or you had doubts -
The sort that minds like ours
Dream up incessantly. You thought
I might not want your flowers.

It made me smile and hug you then.
Now I can only smile.
But, Look, the flowers you nearly bought
Have lasted all this while.

DEFINIENDO EL PROBLEMA

No puedo perdonarte, incluso si pudiera,

DEFINING THE PROBLEM

I can’t forgive you. Even if I could,
You wouldn’t pardon me for seeing through you.
And yet I cannot cure myself of love
For what I thought you were before I knew you.

STRUGNELL’S BARGAIN

My true love hath my heart and I have hers:
We swapped last Tuesday and we felt elated
But now, whenever one of us refers
To “my heart,” things get rather complicated.
Just now, when she complained, “My heart is racing,”
“You mean my heart is racing,” I replied.
“That’s what I said.” “You mean the heart replacing
Your heart my love.” “Oh piss off, Jake!” she cried.
I ask you, do you think Sir Philip Sidney
Got spoken to like that? And I suspect
If I threw in my liver and a kidney
She’d still address me with as scant respect.
Therefore do I revoke my opening line:
My love can keep her heart and I’ll have mine.

Me da igual.

AFTER THE LUNCH

On Waterloo Bridge where we said our goodbyes,
the weather conditions bring tears to my eyes.
I wipe them away with a black woolly glove
And try not to notice I've fallen in love

On Waterloo Bridge I am trying to think:
This is nothing. you're high on the charm and the drink.
But the juke-box inside me is playing a song
That says something different. And when was it wrong?

On Waterloo Bridge with the wind in my hair
I am tempted to skip. You're a fool. I don't care.
the head does its best but the heart is the boss-
I admit it before I am halfway across
