Germaine Calderón, Ya no soy un caballo

Fotografía de Wilma Hurskainen,
de la serie The woman who married a horse, 2011

YA NO SOY UN CABALLO

Hay signos
desesperanzas en duelo
algunos vagabundos
en crecimiento con la noche
con el olor del mundo
muchachos
como pájaros tímidos

Los montes marineros azules
nosotros silenciosos
buscando algún rellano
un pueblo más que este
insignificante en tres patas
una sombra del tamaño del agua
y un vino incesante
a la hora de la memoria
para caer tumbados en las lindes
donde se ríe
con una extraña mueca
por nuestra desnudez obscena

Hoy he volteado
mi sueño como un guante
yo mismo
me he puesto a secar por el reverso
y el corazón se extraña
de su doblez
de su flanco
de su tamaño inminente
y yo me extraño
de ser tan parecido
a un hombre
Siempre pensé que era un caballo
las gentes me llamaban por mi nombre
y yo acudía
con un instinto manso

Amaba la corteza llovida
el grano tierno como dádiva
y creía
en los músculos simples
en la rapidez del aire
en la oración impaciente
desbocada

Entonces
los árboles
semejaban guerreros
lo verde venía de las raíces
y las raíces no tenían
un lugar fijo

En esas largas caminatas
se estrenaban los días
y no había otro lenguaje que vivir
de una manera recia
desde el origen
casi brutalmente

Sabia que estar
era doblegarse
por disciplina
no por hambre
que era el tiempo de los mitos
de los encantadores
con sus flautas

La medida era el fuego
el bienestar residía
en ser
de pronto
de la crin a los nervios
rebelde
y sin embargo,
el ojo siempre
agrandado
por la mansedumbre

Pero hoy me descubro
tan igualmente a todos
limitado en ideas
en trabajo
y tan sólo
y tan sólo mirando

NOW THAT I AM NO LONGER A HORSE

There are signs
 duels of despair
hobos who wander
and grow with the night
with the aromas of the world,
boys like birds
in their shyness

The mountains,  blue´clad sailors
and we here silent,
seeking some flatland
some little town that is more
than this one,
insignificant on its three legs
a shadow in the measure of water
and wine, incessant
at memory's hour
where we collapse on the hillsides
where there is laughter,
like a strange grimace
in the face of our obscene
exposure.

Today I have turned my
dreams inside out like a glove,
I have turned myself out to dry
my heart puzzled
by its seams
and its flanks
by its imminent size
and I am puzzled
to find myself looking
   so much
like a human.

I always thought I was a horse
people called me by my name
and I came
 by gentle instinct

I loved the damp bark
grains as tender as a gift
and I believed
in simple muscles
in the swiftness of air
in impatient, runaway
prayer

In those days
trees were like
warriors
and greenness shot up
from the roots
and roots were fixed
nowhere

On those long strolls
  a debut of days
and there was no other language
    for living
except in a way that was hard
almost brutal
from the start

I knew that to be
was to give in -
to discipline
and not in hunger
that these were the days of tales
of charmers and their flutes

Measures were welded in fire
and well being meant being
suddenly
from mane to nerves,
a rebel
but always with the wide
rounded eyes of the docile

Today however
I discover myself
 so much the same
as all others,so
  bounded in ideas
    in labor
and watching,
merely watching.

PORQUE HE SIDO ELLA

En el bus
de Newark a New York
el bebé vomita
en el cuello de zorro
de su único abrigo

Ella limpia el cuello
y el rostro suave del bebé
luego coge al crío
de la mano
y se dirige al metro

donde el crío
duerme
sobre su rodilla
y ella
                  ella misma
posa su mirada perdida
a través de la ventana
por encima de la cabeza
del bebé que duerme

Tiene veintisiete años
y está muy cansada
                  Permíteme
ayudarla siempre
                  Porque he sido ella, permíteme
ser su amiga

On the bus
from Newark to New York
the baby pukes
into the fox collar
of her only coat

She wipes the collar
and the baby's soft face
then takes her toddler
by the hand
and heads for the subway

where the toddler
sleeps
at her knee
and she
       herself
stares
out the window
over the head
of the sleeping baby
She is twenty-seven
and very tired

               Let me always
support her
             Having been her
befriend her

de How I Became, Grove Press, NYC., 1990

No ônibus
entre Newark e Nova Iorque
o bebê vomita
na gola de pele
do seu único casaco de inverno

Ela limpa a gola

e o rosto macio do nenêm
em seguida toma a pequena
pela mão
e pegam rumo ao metrô

onde a pequena dorme

sobre seu joelho
e ela
              mesma
fixa o olhar
pela janela
por cima da cabeça
da pequena que dorme
Ela tem 27 anos
e está muito cansada
                      Me deixe sempre
apoiá-la
                    Tendo sido ela,
tornar-me amiga sua

CONDUCTORA TEMERARIA

he aquí el dilema
en él la solución:

siempre he sido a la vez
tan mujer como para derramar lágrimas de emoción
y tan hombre
como para conducir mi coche en cualquier dirección.

HARD DRIVE

Saturday the stuffed bears were up again
over the Major Deegan
dancing in plastic along the bridge rail
under a sky half misty, half blue
and there were white clouds
blowing in from the west

which would have been enough
for one used to pleasure
in small doses

but then later, at sunset,
driving north along the Saw Mill
in a high wind, with clouds big and drifting
above the road like animals
proud of their pink underbellies,
in a moment of intense light
I saw an Edward Hopper House,
at once so exquisitely light and dark
that I cried, all the way up Route 22
those uncontrollable tears
“as though the body were crying”

and so young women
here’s the dilemma
itself the solution

I have always been at the same time
woman enough to be moved to tears
and man enough
to drive my car in any direction

de Drive, Hanging Loose Press, 1998

DIREÇÃO

No sábado os ursos de pelúcia flutuavam de novo
sobre o Major Deegan
dançando no plástico ao longo do corrimão da ponte
sob um céu meio nublado, meio azul
e havia nuvens brancas
chegando do oeste

e homem o suficiente
para pegar o carro e me mandar
em qualquer direção
